A Dragon Quest Collection: 25th Anniversary set has been announced by Square Enix for the Wii.
Inspired by the Super Mario Super Mario All-Stars: Wii Collection no doubt, this Wii set would bundle together three classic games: Dragon Quest 1, Dragon Quest II and Dragon Quest III, all of which were released for the Nintendo Entertainment System in Japan. The NES games were also released in North America, originally under the title “Dragon Warrior”, and the first two games were re-released for the Game Boy Color in 2000 as “Dragon Warrior I & II”.
In a very interesting twist, this Wii collection will include not only the NES versions of the above three titles, but also the Super NES versions! The full title of the Japanese version of the game is the insanely long: “Dragon Quest 25th Anniversary Famicom & Super Famicom Dragon Quest I, II, III”. It will be released in Japan this September 2011.
Hopefully this set will also be released in the West, particularly as none of the above titles have been re-released in North America for modern systems, with the last time the ports were seen being the above-mentioned Game Boy Color release of “Dragon Warrior I&II”, which is obviously missing the third game. Not only that, but none of the first three titles have been re-released on the Wii Virtual title either, or remade like the DS titles (Dragon Quest IV: Chapters of the Chosen, Dragon Quest V: Hand of the Heavenly Bride and Dragon Quest VI: Realms of Revelation, each of which recieved updated graphics, new translations and more for the DS re-release).
So far it is unknown if the Wii Collection includes any extras, hopefully it will. The Mario Wii Collection included both a soundtrack CD and an art/history book, although both were underwhelming as you can see in my Super Mario All-Stars Wii 25th Anniversary Collection unboxing video.
The next game in the series will be Dragon Quest X, being exclusively developed for the Wii and expected to be released in 2012.
